I ground my teeth together in an effort to keep from screaming; the enemy had deployed soldiers to search for me and anyone else who had been shot down, and I didn't want to be held captive. I had heard them, and, in a great effort, pulled my hand pistol out of my pocket. It sat in the snow next to my hand, fully loaded in case anyone spotted me. As badly injured as I was, I didn't want anyone but my allies coming to rescue me.
